HMYOI Cookham Wood

Our headline project ‘Inspire 4 Sport’ uses the Powers of Sport to Inspire, Motivate and Educate young people within the youth estate. HMYOI Cookham Wood delivers across 4 projects to support their young people and staff with both physical and emotional health, delivering formal education and mentoring to aid in the building of positive relationships. The programme consists of the following key areas of focus:

Reconnect

Future Pathways

Next Gen

Resettlement

Reconnect

The reconnect project works with the most vulnerable young people who are referred to us during their time in custody. We offer individuals support through physical activity and positive interaction.

Conflict Resolution is a large part of this project. We understand the power of sport and how physical activity can attract young people to positively participate and lead activities with others and continue to develop important life skills such as leadership, communication, respect, and positive team cohesion, which means individuals resolve issues and become a whole community where once there were fractures.

Next Gen

Run in partnership with the UK charity StreetGames, we deliver Next Gen sports clubs to allow young people access to regular sporting opportunities which run parallel to how StreetGames structure their community sessions. This allows for a smooth transition when young people are released and can access local community-based sporting opportunities in replacement of criminal activity.

Future Pathways

The young people access many opportunities under the Future Pathways project as they work towards rehabilitation back into the community.

Implementing qualified teachers ensures all young people gain an educational qualification allowing them to develop and upskill themselves while valuing the importance of education and studying

Our staff have established a close working relationship with both the staff and young people within the resettlement at HMYOI Cookham Wood. This allows for two-way support in the creation of a positive culture and providing opportunities with their young people.

Resettlement

We provide purposeful resettlement opportunities with our community partners and across our organisation. Allowing young people who wish to make a different path for their future to apply to be released on a temporary licence (ROTL) and inline the young person’s individual release plan.

Allowing these young people the opportunity to access working with positive role models on work experience or to gain additional qualifications and life skills reading them live independently.
